ChipIn a web 2.0 company from Hawaii
I’ve been keeping an eye on a local start up called ChipIn. The idea is that you can use their website to assist in “chipping in”. Like when you go out to eat with some friends and want to split the bill or when you are buying a birthday present for a person and want to split the cost. It’s an interesting idea, and I really do hope these guys succeed. I’m all for tech business in Hawaii and really wish we had more smart companies coming out of Hawaii. But, that being said, I worry that these guys didn’t ask everyone that they know if they would use their service. I’ve asked a few friends what they thought of the idea and most agree — why not just divide up the cost and pay cash like we always do. It’s not a big enough problem that requires a web service that will end up costing extra money. And in all reality, I don’t see the “web 2.0″ advantage over a service like PayPal. On the upside, the info I saw on these guys in Hawaii Business Magazine seemed pretty impressive and I don’t doubt their ability to turn this into something useful.
Where I learned about them: Hawaii Business Mag — (side note: I would link directly to the articles, but HI Bus has a shitty policy of not archiving their articles online. They really should provide their articles online permanently. It would be a hugely awesome resource for Hawaii’s businesses and could easily make them some ad revenue.) [...] Chipin (earlier post about them) relaunched with the catch phrase “The easy way to collect money”. So now they make cool little widgets to take donations. Nifty, unfortunately with the video I didn’t really care if people knew how much money was donated and didn’t have any particular goals for the amount to raise. [...]
