Maui Internship Wrapup

School is rolling again and life is returning to a regular schedule that was constantly up in the air since the Maui internship finished more than a month ago. That experience never got a conclusion here, but if these posts are ever come across by a student considering the program I want there to be a conclusion. Here it is.

The Akamai Internship is great. Do it. Especially if it’s your first internship and especially if you’re not from Maui. Try to get interest from the company you would like to work for directly through contacts, job fairs, or cover letters and resumes. If you can get an in with a company and then apply for the program they will probably be more prepared and likely to give you relevant work in your area of study.

In my 7 weeks it was somewhat unfortunate that the engineers with projects for me were on vacation for the first several weeks. Things picked up in the last several weeks though, and I had my own little mechanical design project. You can see all about it on the Akamai/Cfao website — that stuff is purely prepared for the Cfao program. For Textron I created a packet of CAD drawings and a design memo to document the project. There were a couple other smaller tasks that I did as well, mostly involving a little MatLab and doing research/googling. If you are really curious or have any questions, you can email me: kzo@kzo.net

But without a doubt, the best part about this program is that 1) you make some great friends, 2) it’s on Maui and 3) you’re on Maui with great friends. Of-course making a little bit of money is good too — as is something solid to put on your resume. My goal was to explore job opportunities in Hawaii’s tech industry and I feel as if that goal was accomplished.
