Hybrid Wood/Carbon-Fiber OC-1 Paddles by Keizo Gates

I made these outrigger paddles as a summer job in 2002. Worked half a day for about six weeks and sold them faster than I could make them at $200 each.

The shaft is laminated bass wood with teak stringers that gives strength and allows flexing. The blades are constructed of 5 lb-density core-cell foam sandwitched in 4.8 oz carbon fiber twill. The high tech materials allowed me to make them extremely thin and light, while remaining stiff and strong. The tip of the blade comes to a sharp edge of about 2mm for clean entry into the water and the edges are about 4-5mm thick. The white edges are solid epoxy glue that is reinforced by the carbon fiber around it.
